Bonfils Needs Community Support to Replenish Blood Supply
DENVER (Jan. 7, 2010) – Bonfils Blood Center is seeking the community's help in replenishing the community blood supply depleted by a decline in donations over the holidays and persistent adverse weather and road conditions across the state. An onslaught of traumas requiring blood transfusions in our community this week is also a factor.
The community is encouraged to help return the blood supply to a stable level by scheduling an appointment to give blood in the next few days. Visit www.bonfils.org or call 303.363.2300 to schedule a donation appointment.
"Bonfils is not alone in our struggle to maintain a stable blood supply level as we begin the New Year," said Jessica Maitland, vice president of marketing and community operations. "Communities across the country are experiencing frigid temperatures keeping many people from taking time out to give blood. Inclement weather is also contributing to increased accidents amplifying the need for people to come forward and give blood."
Blood donations decrease up to 20 percent in the winter months due to travel, poor weather conditions and colds and flu, however, the need remains constant. Blood donors who give blood now through Saturday, Jan. 23 will receive a Bonfils Blood Center ice scrapper appreciation of their donation.
Bonfils Blood Center supplies blood to nearly 200 healthcare facilities and needs to collect more than 3,300 blood donations weekly to meet the needs of the community and to be prepared for any unexpected events. For information about Bonfils Blood Center please call 303.366.2000 or visit www.bonfils.org.
