Coloradans urged to give blood or platelets before the holiday

Posted on 05/22/2018

Please consider giving blood or platelets now before the long Memorial Day weekend. This will help boost a low supply and meet the transfusion needs of patients during the upcoming holiday. Currently, platelet usage by hospital patients is slightly higher than average while in some areas it is considerably higher.

Platelets are a special component of blood that helps control bleeding. They have a shelf life of only 5 days so it’s extremely important to continuously replenish the supply.

“Right now, we’re seeing an increase in the number of platelets needed by patients,” Bonfils Senior Director of Donor Recruitment Charlie Propernick said. “We work hard to efficiently manage the community blood supply, but it can be challenging at times to predict which components may be needed more than others on any given day or week.”

Bonfils Blood Center is part of the Blood Systems network of regional and community blood centers. This network is leveraged to assure enough blood is available where it’s needed most. Part of this resource sharing includes transferring platelets and other blood components from one area with a lesser need to another area with a greater need.

As school winds down and summer vacations begin, fewer people tend to give blood or platelets, while patients’ needs for everything from ongoing therapies, routine surgeries and traumas don’t take a break.

New donors are always needed to help maintain that safe and ready supply.

All eight Bonfils donor centers are open every Saturday. All but Boulder are open on Sunday. Four Bonfils community donor centers will be open for blood and platelet donations on Memorial Day, Monday, May 28 from 8 am – 1 pm:
